About Burien, Washington

Burien is a city of 52,066 people in King County, on Puget Sound south of Seattle. Lushootseed-speaking peoples, among them the Duwamish, Suquamish, Muckleshoot and Puyallup, hunted in these woods and picked cranberries in the bogs long before George Ouelliet, a French Canadian, bought the area's first federal land patents in 1864. Michael Kelly later climbed the hill hoping for a view of the Sound. He found a forested valley instead and called it Sunnydale. He built a road to reach it, and he and his bride Jane moved into a log cabin on their 160-acre homestead on April 1, 1873.

Gottlieb and Emma Burian, German immigrants who ran two taverns in Seattle, started a second home in Sunnydale in 1884. In 1889 they bought 120 acres at the southeast corner of the lake. The lake took their name, though no record explains how the spelling changed to Burien, and the town grew up around it. Earlier efforts to form a city had failed, but fear of the airport's planned third runway finally won the vote, and Burien was incorporated on February 28, 1993.

“The new road ... is a splendid piece of work, being wide, well graveled and offering a maximum gradient of 4 per cent.”
The Seattle Times, 1915
  • A 44-acre kettle lakeLake Burien formed as the Puget Lobe of the ice sheet pulled back. A block of the glacier broke away and slowly melted where it sat. The lake belongs to the state, but private homes ring its shore with no public access, and that has kept it at the center of a long local argument.
  • The Highline Road of 1915In July 1915 King County dedicated a scenic highway between Seattle and Tacoma, officially Bond Road No. 12, laid largely over the settlers' old Des Moines Road. Its name spread across the whole southwest county. Highline High School opened in Sunnydale in 1924, and the Highline School District followed in 1941. In 1921 trees were planted along part of the road to honor World War I veterans, and it became Des Moines Memorial Drive.
  • The Toonerville TrolleyFrom 1912 to 1929, families living away from the beaches rode the Highland Park & Lake Burien street railway to and from Seattle. The line ran seven miles, on the route that is now Ambaum Boulevard, and residents gave its small passenger train a fond nickname, the Toonerville Trolley.
  • A bigger city in 2010Burien asked to annex the southern part of North Highline, and the county's Boundary Review Board approved the plan on April 16, 2009. Residents of the area voted yes, and they joined the city on April 1, 2010. A special census counted 14,292 new residents, which brought Burien to 52,066 and made it the 25th largest city in Washington.
