About Bryn Mawr-Skyway, Washington
Bryn Mawr-Skyway is a community of 17,397 people in unincorporated King County, with Seattle to the north, Tukwila to the west and Renton to the south and east. On April 19, 1890, William E. Parker and his wife, Lillie R. Parker, filed a plat for a town named Bryn Mawr, the name the place still carries.
Most of the homes came much later. In the years just after World War II, builders covered the ridge with low-cost houses for veterans coming home from the war. The area is still affordable today, and it sits close to the big employers of Renton and Seattle.
- Welsh for big hillBryn Mawr means "big hill" in Welsh, which suits a community on a high ridge in the hilly country of western Washington. The later name Skyway seems to echo the same idea, and many people here simply call the area West Hill.
- A first in the 2000 censusIn the 2000 census, Bryn Mawr-Skyway was the only census-designated place in the Seattle area where minorities made up most of the population. It kept growing more diverse, and by 2010 its residents were split almost evenly among White, Black and Asian neighbors.
- Skyway Park at its centerSkyway Park, near the middle of the community, has baseball fields, a creek, wetlands and picnic grounds. Renton Avenue South serves as the main street, home to the fire station, several churches and a branch of the King County Library System.
