About Mercer Island, Washington

Mercer Island is a city of 25,748 people in King County, filling an island in the southern part of Lake Washington. Two Snoqualmie settlements stood on its western side before American settlers reached Puget Sound. By 1860 the island carried the name of the Mercer family of Seattle, whose members Thomas, Aaron and Asa Mercer often rowed over to pick berries, hunt and fish. Charles and Agnes Olds became the first newcomers to stay for good in 1885, and 15 more families followed within five years.

In 1940 the first floating bridge opened to Seattle, and the island became a home for commuters. The pace quickened after the tolls ended in 1949. The island had 1,200 residents in 1940, and by 1950 it had 4,500, more than King County could serve. Residents incorporated the City of Mercer Island on July 5, 1960, leaving out the 70-acre business district, which became the separate Town of Mercer Island on August 9. After several failed tries at annexing each other, the two merged on May 19, 1970.

  • The Calkins HotelCharles C. Calkins founded East Seattle, the island's first large community, on the northwest shore in 1887. He built a large, gilded resort there, the Calkins Hotel, which guests reached by steamboat ferry from Madison Park, Leschi Park and the Eastside. President Benjamin Harrison was among its visitors. A mysterious fire burned the hotel, and it was torn down in 1908, but the ferry landing kept running and helped a lasting town take root.
  • Bridges since 1923A wooden East Channel Bridge first tied the island to Bellevue in 1923, and a concrete span replaced it in the 1930s. In 1930 George W. Lightfoot asked for a bridge to Seattle, and the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge opened in 1940. It ranks second in length among the world's floating bridges. The Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge was built beside it in 1989, and all three now carry Interstate 90.
  • Forests under the lakeThe retreating ice of the Vashon Glaciation shaped the island, leaving a plateau down its middle and a series of ravines. Its highest point, near Rotary Park, stands 394 feet above sea level. Earthquakes on the Seattle Fault, which crosses the north end, once set off landslides that carried old-growth trees into two parts of Lake Washington, now called sunken forests.
  • Islanders of noteMicrosoft co-founder Paul Allen, Seattle Times publisher Frank Blethen and Ann Dunham, mother of President Barack Obama, all have Mercer Island ties. So does Jean Enersen, the longtime KING-TV anchor who was the first woman to anchor local news in the country.
