About Boylston, Massachusetts

Boylston is a town of 4,849 people in Worcester County, 10 miles north of central Worcester. The land belonged to the Nashaway people, and in 1643 their sachem Sholan sold a large tract that included it to Thomas King and his partners. Around 1706 the Sawyer family led the first European settlers into the northern part of the present town, after the sachems Sholan and George Tahanto deeded them the land.

For decades the settlement had no government of its own. From 1742 it was the North Parish of Shrewsbury, formed mostly from Shrewsbury land with the rest taken from Lancaster. The parish raised its meeting house in 1743 and ordained the Reverend Ebenezer Morse as its first minister that October. In 1786 the parish was incorporated as a separate town and took the name Boylston.

  • Named for a Boston merchantWard Nicholas Boylston was born Ward Hallowell in 1747 and became a Boston merchant and a benefactor of the town that carries his name. In 1797 he set up a fund for Boylston. It slowly grew to $1,450, and the town spent it on a town hall and school building. He gave even more to Harvard, where his money paid for a professorship of rhetoric and oratory, a medical library and an anatomical museum.
  • Mills lost to the reservoirBoylston families worked farms and kept mills along the Nashua River, but Boston needed their valley for its water. In 1897 the Wachusett Dam at Clinton blocked the river, and 4,380 acres in Boylston, West Boylston, Clinton and Sterling went under water. Work ended in 1905, and the reservoir first filled in May 1908. No public reservoir built for drinking water anywhere in the world was larger at that time, and it still serves Greater Boston.
  • Tower Hill since 1986Founded in 1842, the Worcester County Horticultural Society opened the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill on the old Tower Hill Farm in 1986. Its 200 acres of gardens, woods and trails draw more than 200,000 visitors a year. From the terrace you can see Mount Wachusett and the reservoir, and the orchard keeps 250 apple trees of 119 varieties, all of them grown before the 20th century.
