About Northborough, Massachusetts

Northborough is a town of 15,741 people in Worcester County, in the valley of the Assabet River. The Nipmuc people lived here first, and in 1672 John Brigham took up land on Licor Meadow Plain and built a saw-mill, likely the earliest mill in what was then Marlborough. Westborough was set off from Marlborough in 1717 and still took in this land, until on October 20, 1744, its northern part became a second precinct with a church of its own.

That church was gathered on May 21, 1746, and the Rev. John Martyn was ordained as its first minister. In January 1766 the precinct became the District of Northborough, which held every power of a town except the right to send its own representative. It became a full town on August 23, 1775, and on June 20, 1807, part of Marlborough was added to it.

“In considering the number of inhabitants (not far from 800), the extent of territory and the distance from the capital, I know not a more wealthy place.”
History of Worcester County, 1889
  • Minutemen at Bunker HillIn 1773 a company of young Northborough men took a pedlar's tea and burned it in the road. On April 19, 1775, the town's fifty minutemen met in Captain Samuel Wood's yard and marched off, and that June they fought at Bunker Hill. On June 3, 1776, the town voted for independence from Great Britain, if the Continental Congress judged it proper.
  • A mastodon in 1884On November 17, 1884, workmen cutting a drain through a meadow on William Maynard's farm, close to the Shrewsbury line, hit teeth and bone seven or eight feet deep in the peat. At the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge, J. A. Allen judged them a young mastodon's, about two-thirds grown. A week later, with the Maynards away at church, neighbors dug and carried off teeth. Worcester's natural history museum received most of the bones.
  • Cloth, combs and tortoise shellAbout 1750 Samuel Wood of Sudbury opened a fulling mill in the lower floor of his house, where the Assabet crosses the post road, and by 1793 it finished about seven thousand yards of cloth a year. A cotton factory followed on the river in 1814, and from 1839 Haynes & Bush made combs, which for a time employed up to 150 people. In 1860 Milo Hildreth began making jewelry from tortoise shell shipped from Zanzibar and the Fiji Islands.
  • A prize for the best motherIn 1817 sixty young women sewed straw in the meetinghouse and bought library books with the $100 they earned. Joseph Allen's astronomy lectures of 1826 grew into a lyceum in 1828 that offered free lectures and winter debates for more than thirty years. In 1831 the town accepted Henry Gassett's $1,000 gift, which paid fifty dollars every three years to the best mother, picked by five mothers and five fathers.
  • A steeple lost in 1938Northborough's Baptists organized in 1827, and in 1860 they built the First Baptist Church of Northborough on Main Street, an Italianate building on the site of their first meetinghouse. The New England Hurricane of 1938 blew off its steeple. Since 1960 the church has housed the offices and museum of the Northborough Historical Society, and it joined the National Register in 2016.
