About Marlborough, Massachusetts

Marlborough is a city of 41,793 people in Middlesex County, on the old road from Boston to Worcester. In 1656 a group of Sudbury families, with Edmund Rice and John Howe among their leaders, asked the General Court for a new town at the spot where the Nashua Trail met the Connecticut path. Howe, a fur trader who spoke the Algonquian tongue of the Pennacook living there, moved in first. In 1660 the plantation called Whipsufferage became the town of Marlborough, named for a market town in Wiltshire, England. During King Philip's War, in March 1676, raiders burned much of the town on a Sunday, and by 1680 settlers had a new meetinghouse with a thatched straw roof.

Shoes later made Marlborough a city. Samuel Boyd and his brother Joseph opened its first shoe business in 1836, with about 25 workers sharing a single room that measured 20 by 30 feet. The town made about 100,000 pairs in 1837 and 1,971,500 pairs in 1855. In 1890, with 14,000 people, Marlborough became the 28th city in Massachusetts, and its seal showed boots, a shoe box and a factory. By 1909 its factories turned out about 6,150,000 pairs in a year, worth an estimated $10,000,000.

  • A tavern sign for 150 yearsLieutenant Abraham Williams lost his travelers' house in the 1676 raid and built a bigger one the next year, under a sign that hung for 150 years. It was one of three stops on the Boston to Worcester road where stage horses were changed. Drivers blew a horn coming over Felton Hill across the pond, telling the keeper how many dinners to cook. President Washington dined there in October 1789 on his way to Boston.
  • The John Brown BellIn 1861 soldiers of Company I, 13th Massachusetts, many of whom were Marlborough firemen, carried off the bell from the Harpers Ferry engine house, the building where John Brown's raid came to its end. The men left the bell in Williamsport, Maryland, with Elizabeth Ensminger, who had kept the company supplied with bread. A few of the veterans returned for it in 1892, and today it hangs in a tower at Route 85 and Main Street.
  • Snowballs in July 1888Marlborough's 1910 town history kept track of the weather people talked about for years, and the strangest day was July 2, 1888. Hail the size of walnuts lay three inches deep on the ground. People had a snowball fight in midsummer, the druggist C. D. Hunter scooped up the ice for his soda fountain, and one farmer took his old mare out in the sleigh.
  • Streetcars from 1889Marlborough's electric street railway began carrying riders on June 19, 1889. The town is believed to be the first in the country chartered for a streetcar system, a few months before Baltimore, and its cars took passengers south toward Milford and north toward Concord.
  • The Peter Rice House, 1688Peter Rice built the first two rooms of his house in 1688. Over the 1700s it grew into a saltbox around a big central chimney. The Capt. Peter Rice House joined the National Register in 1980, and today it is home to the Marlborough Historical Society.
