About Stow, Massachusetts
Stow was named for John Stow, a close friend of Massachusetts Governor Simon Bradstreet. It was settled in 1681 and became a town in 1683. Indians raided the town during King Philip's War. Settlers came back afterward and rebuilt it.
Charles Leggett developed the modern butternut squash in Stow in 1944. He grew it in a field across from the woods his family later gave the town. Those woods carry the Leggett name today.
- How wartime land became a refugeIn 1942 the U.S. Army took about a tenth of Stow's land for a munitions storage site. Owners were forced off their land. The Army held it for many years. In 2005 the land joined the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge.
