About Maynard, Massachusetts

Maynard is a town of 10,746 people in Middlesex County, on the Assabet River 22 miles west of Boston. It began as Assabet Village, on land split between Stow and Sudbury, and by 1869 it had more people than either town. Its people lived far from both town houses and wanted street lights, sidewalks, police and better schools, so they petitioned the state for a town of their own. Sudbury fought the move, since the large woolen mill sat on the Sudbury bank, but the charter was signed on April 19, 1871. In the settlement, Sudbury received about $23,600 from the new town, and Stow about $8,000.

The village owed its growth to Amory Maynard. In 1846 Boston took his water rights at Fort Meadow Pond in Marlborough, so he and William Knight looked to the Assabet, and thirty-four deeds for his land were recorded that July alone. He dug a canal to turn the river into a swampy hollow, which became the millpond, and in the spring of 1847 a wooden mill 50 by 100 feet began spinning yarn and then weaving carpets on hand looms. The mill made cloth for Union uniforms in the Civil War, went bankrupt in 1898, and was bought by the American Woolen Company in 1899 for about $400,000. It ran until 1950.

“Assabet has got divorced from Stow, and repudiated even her maiden name.”
The Hudson Pioneer, 1871
  • Charter news by telegraphApril 19, 1871, fell on the anniversary of the Concord fight, and the village was in the middle of celebrating it when a telegraph message reported the signing, done at twenty minutes past five. The town held its first meeting in Riverside Hall on April 27. More than a thousand people then marched, a cannon from the Revolution, borrowed from Concord, gave the signal to raise a flag on Pompasitticut Hill, and the fireworks waited until the rain stopped.
  • A name that held in 1902Some residents tried in 1902 to rename the town Assabet. They resented that Amory Maynard, who died in 1890, had left the town no gift, and that his son Lorenzo had pulled his own money out of the mill before its 1898 bankruptcy. The Commonwealth kept the name Maynard and never let the question go to a town vote.
  • A clock wound every weekLorenzo Maynard built the mill's clock tower in 1892 as a gift to the town. Its E. Howard & Co. clock is called the oldest hand-wound clock still running in the country. Someone winds its weights once a week, a job of one to two hours, and it has been wound more than 6,000 times.
  • Mini Computer Capital of the WorldDigital Equipment Corporation moved into the empty mill in 1957, renting 8,680 square feet for $300 a month. The company kept growing until it owned the entire complex in 1974, which earned Maynard its nickname. DEC stayed until Compaq bought it in 1998. The renovated mill is now Mill & Main Place, where Powell Flutes has its headquarters.
  • Army land, then a refugeThe U.S. Army seized roughly a fifth of Maynard's land in 1942, along the south side, to store munitions, and evicted the owners who lived there. The ground remained Army property for years until 2005, when it joined the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge.
