About Sudbury, Massachusetts

Sudbury is a town of 18,934 people in Middlesex County. In 1637 Karte, a Native man whose home stood on Goodman's Hill, sold English settlers their first piece of land here. Their first homes went up in 1638 across the Sudbury River to the east, on ground that now belongs to Wayland, and the town was incorporated in 1639 as the second of the inland towns.

The town later lost ground to its neighbors. East Sudbury broke away in 1780 to become Wayland, and the new boundary was bent at Sand Hill so that Sudbury could keep its training field. In 1871 about 1,900 more acres went to help create the town of Maynard.

“few country taverns were better situated than this to gain patronage in the days when few towns of the province were better known than old Sudbury.”
The History of Sudbury, 1889
  • From Red Horse to Wayside InnDavid Howe received 130 acres from his father in 1702 and soon started a house on the Boston road. Col. Ezekiel Howe put up the sign of the Red Horse in 1746, and in 1775 he led the Sudbury men to Concord. Four generations of Howes ran the tavern until about 1866. In 1863 Longfellow published Tales of a Wayside Inn, and the old tavern took that name. Henry Ford bought and restored it in 1923.
  • The fight at Green Hill, 1676On April 21, 1676, during King Philip's War, Captain Samuel Wadsworth's company came to defend Sudbury and was ambushed near Green Hill. The soldiers reached the top and held out for hours until a fire set by their attackers forced them off, and most were killed. They were buried together below the hill. About 1730 the captain's son Benjamin, then Harvard's president, marked the grave, and a granite monument was dedicated nearby on November 23, 1852, during a snowstorm.
  • Mill Village on Hop BrookIn 1659 Thomas and Peter Noyes agreed to build a grist mill where Hop Brook runs fast at today's South Sudbury. The village that grew around it was long called Mill Village. In 1677 five men won permission to put a sawmill upstream, and the Browns later made hatchets, cleavers and billhooks beside the brook.
  • John Goodnow's libraryJohn Goodnow, born in Sudbury, left his hometown land of 3 acres, plus $2,500 to put up a building and $20,000 to buy books. The town accepted the gift in 1862, and a two-story octagon was built in 1862 and 1863. It still serves as a reading room inside the larger Goodnow Library, which joined the National Register in 2002.
  • A house built about 1720The oldest section of the timber-framed Moses Brewer House, also called the Goulding House, was built about 1720 to 1730. It seems to have been moved to Sudbury from its first site in Wayland during the 1700s. Its original dog-leg staircase, a rare survival, rises all the way to the attic, and the house joined the National Register in 1990.
