About Cochituate, Massachusetts
Cochituate is a village of 6,927 people in the southern part of Wayland, in Middlesex County, and its Main Street carries Route 27 north to Wayland Center and south to Natick. The village takes its name from a Native word. At first the word described the land around the settlement, and only later did it pass to the nearby pond, which people had known as Long Pond.
Cochituate grew along with its shoe trade, so that by 1891 the town historian tied the village's prosperity to making shoes. In 1875 the village had nine shoe factories, and those shops employed 431 men and 60 women.
- Place of the rushing torrentTemple's History of Framingham offered two readings of the name, "wild dashing brook" and "place of the rushing torrent," both describing how the pond's outlet looked when the water ran high. Wikipedia gives the Algonquin meaning as "swift river" and connects it to Cochituate Brook, which carries the lake's water to the Sudbury River.
- The Bent brothers' shoe shopWilliam and James Madison Bent spent years handing out shoemaking work from a shop on the village's main street, almost across the road from William's house. Captain William knew the craft from working by hand, while his brother had a natural gift for machines. Their shop got the sewing machine first and the pegging machine later. Little by little the outside work dropped away, until most shoes came from a few big shops.
- Lake Cochituate and Dudley PondBoth bodies of water lie in Cochituate, 16 miles west of Boston. Lake Cochituate is really four ponds joined by shallow, narrow channels, shared with Natick and Framingham. Residents boat and fish on the water in summer and cut holes for ice fishing in winter.
