About Natick, Massachusetts
Natick is a town of 37,006 people in Middlesex County, ten miles west of Boston. In 1651 the Puritan missionary John Eliot came to the Charles River with Massachusett people who had become Christians, and together they founded the first of his praying towns here. The settlers laid out streets on both banks and built an eighty-foot footbridge with their own labor, turning down Eliot's offer of pay. Native leaders such as Waban ran the village, and no English officer was elected until 1733.
In November 1675, during King Philip's War, colonial leaders shipped the Natick people to Deer Island, and many died there of cold and sickness. The survivors came home to ruined houses, and their shared land was slowly sold to English settlers to pay debts. When Oliver Peabody first preached here in 1721, he found only two English families, but by 1785 most Native families had drifted away. Natick became a parish in 1745 and was incorporated as a town in 1781.
“A truly New England landscape is presented in Natick, the church and school, the library and factory, the public hall and stores, the green-house and the farm, the flying train and the telegraphic wires.”
- A Bible in the Natick dialectEliot translated scripture with Native helpers who spoke both languages, Job Nesuton of Natick among them. By 1658 people here read Genesis and Matthew in their own tongue, and the Natick church was gathered in 1660. The New Testament came off the press in 1661 and the complete Bible in 1685, the first Bible printed anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. Later the church had a Native minister, the Rev. Daniel Takawambait, who died in 1716 at sixty-four.
- The Natick CobblerHenry Wilson made the trip on foot from Farmington, New Hampshire, in December 1833 and came to Natick to learn to make shoes. A marker on an outbuilding at the Robert Jenison House, built about 1738 and listed on the National Register in 1978, shows where he learned. He later worked in a ten-footer, a backyard shop listed in 2000. Tradition credits him with 664,000 pairs of shoes before he became a senator and the 18th vice president.
- Brogans and baseballsAsa Felch began making shoes for sale in a room of his house in 1827, and the village of Felchville grew around his business. Natick became known for the brogan, a heavy ankle-high boot worn by Civil War soldiers, and by 1880 its 23 factories ranked it third in the nation for shoes. Harrison Harwood started making baseballs in 1858; workers wound balls in his shop while women stitched the covers at home. The factory became condominiums in 1988.
- The bell rang three timesFire started at Summer and North Main Streets on the morning of January 13, 1874, and swept the wooden center. The burning Congregational spire's bell struck three times before falling. Close to forty buildings, roughly a fifth of taxable property, burned, but no one died. Natick turned on Dug Pond water in August 1875 and built a new Central Fire Station on Summer Street.
- Steamed hot dogs since 1927Casey's Diner is a ten-stool lunch car built by the Worcester Lunch Car Company in 1922. Fred Casey brought it to Natick in 1927, and in 1977 it moved to South Avenue. Famous for steamed hot dogs, it ranks among the oldest diners still running in Massachusetts and joined the National Register in 1999.
