About Needham, Massachusetts
Needham is a town of 32,091 people in Norfolk County, almost surrounded by the Charles River. In 1680 settlers paid Chief Nehoiden for a piece of land measuring four miles by five, giving him 10 pounds, 40 acres and corn worth 40 shillings. The land then belonged to Dedham as its North Parish. Forty men on the north bank complained that their schools and churches were poor and asked the General Court for a town of their own. Dedham did not fight them, and in 1711 the court created Needham, named for Needham Market in Suffolk, England.
The railroad opened to Needham on June 1, 1853. Instead of passing the old Centre on Central Avenue, it ran across the Great Plain, the story says because one man refused to give up his land. Business followed the tracks, and by 1879 the First Parish meetinghouse itself had left the old Centre, so the Great Plain became today's Needham Square. In 1881 the West Parish left to become the town of Wellesley, and in 1882 the two high schools met in their first Thanksgiving football game.
“Our town is a unit in a constellation of towns and cities and mighty states, and it is older than the Federal government itself.”
- Five men lost in 1775The militia met at the Rev. Samuel West's house, where the town stored ammunition, now the Townsend House. They marched to West Cambridge and met the retreating British; five Needham men died. John Tolman, of today's Tolman-Gay House farm, survived a bullet between the shoulders.
- Hills hauled to the Back BayBoston began filling its Back Bay in 1857, and in 1859 Myron C. Munson started carrying gravel there from East Needham. Two hundred men dug in the pits, locomotives hauled forty loaded cars at a time, and the trains kept running through the night. Within ten years the hills were gone, and the hundreds of acres left behind stayed nearly worthless for twenty-five years.
- English knitters in HighlandvilleEnglish knitters started coming in the late 1840s. They ran hand-frames in little shops, most of them in Highlandville, where people grew used to seeing gloves and stockings stretched on boards to dry. In 1864 Mark and John Lee put up the first section of a large knitting mill there, and William Carter, born in Alfreton, Derbyshire, joined them in 1869. His company later employed three to four hundred people in town.
- Baker's Ridge Hill FarmWilliam Emerson Baker, who had grown rich improving the sewing machine, came to Needham in the late 1860s and put together more than 800 acres he called Ridge Hill Farm. He dug two lakes, one of them Sabrina Lake, and turned part of the estate into an amusement park full of tunnels, trick floors and exotic animals. His Hotel Wellesley, built in 1888, could hold more than 300 guests until fire destroyed it on December 19, 1891.
- A school named for an astronautSunita Williams grew up in Needham and graduated from its high school in 1983. Later she commanded the International Space Station twice. In 2017 the school committee voted to give her name to a new elementary school, and the Sunita L. Williams Elementary School opened in the fall of 2019 to replace the aging Hillside school.
