About Newton, Massachusetts
Newton is a city of 88,923 people in Middlesex County, about 8 miles west of downtown Boston, with the Charles River bending along its northern and western edges. Before anyone else, the land was home to the Massachusett of Nonantum, whose sachem was Waban. On October 28, 1646, John Eliot preached in Waban's large wigwam on the hill called Nonantum, and in 1651 he persuaded Waban's people to move to Natick. English settlers had already arrived in 1639, when this land still belonged to Cambridge.
The settlers broke away from Cambridge on December 15, 1681, as Cambridge Village. The town was renamed Newtown in 1691 and Newton in 1766. When the Boston and Worcester line got to West Newton in 1834, wealthy Boston businessmen began building fine homes on old farmland there and riding the train to work, so Newton became one of the continent's first commuter suburbs. It became a city on January 5, 1874, and it still grows as thirteen villages rather than around one downtown.
“Few towns in the Commonwealth present so many eligible sites for building, or more delightful prospects.”
- Villages named by the trainsAccording to a county history from 1927, Waban, Eliot, Woodland, Riverside, Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton and the Highlands all took their names from railroad stations, frequently ahead of any settlement. Newton Highlands was first called Oak Hill, even though it sat on flat ground, and then Newton Dale. Back in 1800 Auburndale counted only seven houses, and people say its name was taken from a poem's line about Sweet Auburn.
- Snuff mills and an echoIn 1688 John Clark built a mill at the top of the rapids where the Charles falls twenty feet, and Newton Upper Falls grew from it. The Boston tobacconist Simon Elliot later ran snuff mills there with twenty mortars. In 1876 and 1877 a granite arch 130 feet wide was raised over the gorge to carry Boston's water, and an 1889 handbook said a voice came back 18 times from under it, and a pistol shot 25.
- A station on the Underground RailroadTimothy Jackson put up a Federal farmhouse on land his family owned in 1809. William Jackson, his son, made it his home from 1820. He opposed slavery and later sat in Congress, and the house hid people fleeing slavery along the Underground Railroad. The Jackson Homestead joined the National Register in 1973 and is now the Newton History Museum.
- One pond, four namesThomas Wiswall built his house beside the pond in 1654, and it became Wiswall's Pond. In 1795 the Baptists put up a meetinghouse near the water on land Noah Wiswall gave them, with seats of rough boards and no stove for fifteen years. The pond was briefly Silver Lake, then Baptist Pond for a long while, until an ice harvester renamed it Crystal Lake. On good winter days hundreds of skaters came out.
