About Sherborn, Massachusetts
The Dowse family of Sherborn turned its leather trade into making stagecoach whips. Joseph Dowse, Jr., sold handmade whips 20 feet long at his shop. His brothers Benjamin and Nathaniel ran whip shops close by. The last Dowse Brothers whips were made in 1876. They went to Minnesota, where stagecoaches still ran.
The Memory statue in front of the Central Burying Ground was given to Sherborn in 1924 for its 250th anniversary. Cyrus Dallin sculpted it. He also made Appeal to the Great Spirit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Native son William Bradford Home Dowse gave the memorial.
