About Millis, Massachusetts

Millis is a town of 8,460 people in Norfolk County, on the Charles River, 19 miles southwest of Boston. Dedham first owned this land and handed it to Medfield in 1651, and European settlers came in 1657. When Medfield people won a grant for a new town called Medway in 1713, this ground became its eastern half, known as East Medway.

The Great Black Swamp, hundreds of acres wide, kept the two halves of Medway apart. Lansing Millis, a railroad entrepreneur, built rail lines that linked the east side to Dedham, Boston and Cambridge, and with his work it broke away and was incorporated as the town of Millis on February 24, 1885. The Hartford and Dedham Turnpike, laid out in 1806, still carries traffic toward Boston as Route 109.

  • King Philip's War, 1676On February 21, 1676, Native forces killed 17 people in Medfield and burned half that town, including 32 houses and two mills. The warriors under Metacom then crossed into what is now Millis and held a great feast at a spot still marked by the King Philip Trees, which the Millis Historical Society protects. On February 22 they attacked the Fayerbanke Palisades at Boggestowe Farms, and the defenders drove them off, as they did again on May 6.
  • Lunch with George WashingtonRichardson's Tavern went up around 1720. In 1775 George Washington stopped there for a midday meal while riding to Cambridge, and local stories say Nathan Hale and the Marquis de Lafayette ate there too.
  • Ginger ale on Main StreetHenry Millis started the Clicquot Club company on Main Street with his father Lansing's money, flavoring its ginger ale with Millis-grown ginger. For about eighty years it sold the country's first ginger ale brand, and became the first American company to can drinks. It grew to more than 100 factories and shipped overseas, but sales fell in the 1960s and it went bankrupt. Cott bought it, and Canada Dry later bought Cott. The village of Clicquot keeps its name.
  • Boots for two warsThe Herman Shoe Company, put together through several private buyouts, made boots and other gear during the Spanish-American War. In World War II it made most of the boots worn by American troops. The company later closed, and its factory was torn down in March 2020.
  • Brick and sand on Causeway StreetCauseway Street, now a quiet road in western Millis, was once an industrial center for digging clay and sand. A few wealthy families ran its brickyards, whose bricks built many big estates and buildings near and far. Pit sand went into Logan International Airport's most recent runway, and a large clay pit became Heather's Pond. The Clark family estate became the farm of Christian Herter, Massachusetts governor and Eisenhower's Secretary of State, who is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
