About Norfolk, Massachusetts

Norfolk is a town of 11,662 people in Norfolk County, on the upper Charles River. Its land first belonged to Dedham, where a half dozen small farms began after 1669, and it became the northern end of Wrentham in 1673. In the early 1790s a fight over the Rev. David Avery divided Wrentham's families into Averians and Anti-Averians, and in 1793 the town dismissed him by a vote of 74 to 1.

On September 29, 1795, people in the north end met to plan their own church, and thirty-eight men promised $1,244 toward a meetinghouse and a minister. The building was done in 1796, and North Wrentham then became the North Parish. The Norfolk County Railroad reached the parish in 1849. On February 23, 1870, the parish joined with pieces of Franklin, Medway and Walpole to form the town of Norfolk, and the first town meeting followed on March 7.

“To promote the happiness of ourselves as well as the rising Generation, we, the subscribers, do jointly agree to the subsequent articles.”
History of Norfolk County, 1884
  • A town house with a clockWhen the parish became a town in 1870, the 1796 meetinghouse became Norfolk's town house. A tower was added in 1879, along with a clock given by Josiah Ware. Fire destroyed the town hall in 1922, so meetings shifted to the Grange Hall on Rockwood Road, which the Baptists had built as their church in 1863. Voters gathered there until 1949. The Norfolk Grange Hall, home of the Grange since 1921, joined the National Register in 1989.
  • Iron, then paper, at Highland LakeWalpole men once dug bog iron and carted it to a smelter where Lincoln Road crosses the Stop River. The smelter shut down about 1830, once better ore turned up in Sharon, at Massapoag Pond. George and Thomas Campbell opened a paper mill on the old site in 1845, and the nearby railroad stop was Campbell's Station until it took the lake's name. Walpole gave this corner to Norfolk in 1870, and in 1885 the mill employed eighteen people.
  • City Mills, older than the townWrentham put up a corn mill at Jack's Pasture, the future City Mills, in the 1690s. Around 1819 Eli Richardson put up a stone store there and opened Norfolk's first post office in it. In 1884 the mills were a felt mill run by the Ray family of Franklin, with eighty workers making 500,000 yards a year. The village belonged to Franklin until it came into Norfolk in 1870.
  • Stephen Turner's houseStephen Turner bought land on Seekonk Street in 1712, and his house went up some time after that. Ichabod, his son and a veteran of the Revolutionary War, sold the house in 1792, and an ell was added in 1812. The house may contain beams from a 17th-century fortified house, and it joined the National Register in 1979.
  • Pondville's terraced cemeteryThe village of Pondville began its cemetery about 1757, while Norfolk was still part of Wrentham. Its graves climb in terraces up from Everett Street. The most famous marker, a Victorian memorial raised about 1877, honors Captain Abijah Pond, who fought in the Revolutionary War. Pondville Cemetery joined the National Register in 2014.
