About Plainville, Massachusetts
Plainville is a town of 9,945 people in Norfolk County, on the Rhode Island line. Its land was part of a 1635 grant for Dedham. Since 1649, people from Dedham had traveled to the Wollomonopoag meadows to mow hay, and in 1661 the town voted to start a plantation there. The land became part of Wrentham in 1673. In 1674 a Wampanoag man named Matchinamook was granted a few acres where the Ten Mile River begins, at today's Fuller's Dam.
For years the village was known as Slackville, for the Slack family, whose small stone mill stood beside the road to Attleborough. When the village got its own post office in 1856, it adopted the name Plainville for the flat plains around it. Its jewelry shops kept growing, and on April 4, 1905, Plainville was set off from Wrentham, becoming the third youngest town in the state. Eight days later voters held their first town meeting in the Methodist Episcopal Church and agreed to borrow $15,000 for a new schoolhouse.
“Plainville has grown into considerable prominence through the enterprise of those who have built up this peculiar interest.”
- Jewelry in Slack's old millBefore 1843 George W. Shepardson was making buttons for vests and pantaloons inside the Slack family's stone mill, and the 1884 county history names him as the man who brought jewelry work to Wrentham. Later Joseph T. Bacon pulled the mill down and built a jewelry factory where it had stood, and Bacon, Hodges & Co. began there in 1844. The village's shops could hold five hundred workers by 1884.
- The errand boy's mesh bagIn 1876 six partners put in $500 each to start Wade, Davis and Company, making plated pins, earrings and bracelets. Charles A. Whiting was hired as its errand boy in 1880 and paid nine cents an hour. In 1892 he made the firm's first mesh bag, and in 1896 he became a partner and the company took the name Whiting and Davis.
- Mesh by machineUntil 1909, workers made mesh by hand. That year A. C. Pratt built machines to do the job, and they reached the Plainville plant in April 1910. By 1918 the town claimed the world's largest maker of ladies' mesh bags, and the plant had five hundred workers by 1928.
- A seal from the colony lineIn November 1905 a committee proposed a town seal showing the new school. Town clerk James H. Shannon suggested instead the Angle Tree monument at the North Attleboro line. In 1664 commissioners from Plymouth Colony and Massachusetts Bay had marked a tree there, and once it was gone, the state paid Lemuel Kollock in 1791 for a stone to replace it. Voters chose Shannon's design by a wide margin, and the stone still appears on the seal.
- A Wimpy Kid's bookstoreJeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, made Plainville his home in 2002. In 2015 Kinney and his wife Julie opened An Unlikely Story, a bookstore with a cafe, here in town.
