About Mansfield, Massachusetts

Mansfield is a town of 23,860 people in Bristol County, on the Canoe, Rumford and Wading rivers. It began as the north end of Norton, and for years its families kept petitioning that town for a separate parish, only to be voted down. In 1732 they counted their supporters ahead of time, and this time they won.

Finding a minister took four more years. Abial Hayward of Bridgewater, Atherton Wales and Samuel Tobey of Sandwich all turned the parish down before Ebenezer White of Brookline accepted in 1736. On April 26, 1770, the precinct separated from Norton and became the District of Mansfield. In 1775 it became a town, taking the name of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who sided with the colonies in the House of Lords.

“Mansfield Centre, the principal village, is a brisk and thriving place, having unusual railroad facilities, well-shaded streets, handsome residences and churches.”
Gazetteer of Massachusetts, 1890
  • A salute for LafayetteCapt. Ira Richardson of the Norton Artillery lived in the Fisher-Richardson House on Willow Street, built between 1743 and 1751. When Lafayette returned to America, the company marched to Pawtucket to greet him with cannon fire. Remarks about his guns had hurt the captain's pride, so he ordered every barrel packed full of powder. The opening blast shook buildings and knocked glass from windows. Restored by the town in 1930, the house joined the National Register in 1998.
  • Bonnets, tacks and horn braceletsSolomon Pratt bought straw braid from women up to thirty miles away and once made fifteen thousand bonnets from his supply. His Middle Factory burned uninsured in 1830, and the rebuilt mill earned back its cost within a year. Whiteville grew rich on Simeon White's tacks and shoe-nails. Francis G. Hodges began making horn bracelets in a barn in 1863, and the basket trade, begun by Abner Bailey in 1793, still employed nearly a hundred people in 1883.
  • A library for the soldiersPeabody and Stearns designed the Soldiers' Memorial Library, a Gothic Revival building raised from 1899 to 1901 largely with money from Elizabeth F. Noble. The public library filled the ground floor, and the upper floor honored the town's Civil War soldiers. It was dedicated on June 17, 1901, and joined the National Register in 1995.
  • Great Woods, 1986Yo-Yo Ma and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra played the first night at Great Woods on June 13, 1986. Its planners picked Mansfield because Boston, Providence, Worcester and Cape Cod all lay within 40 miles. The stage later took the names Tweeter Center and Comcast Center, and as the Xfinity Center it now holds 19,900 people.
  • The first Honey Dew, 1973On June 6, 1973, Dick Bowen opened the first Honey Dew Donuts shop at 221 North Main Street, and the chain spread across New England from there.
