About Sharon, Massachusetts

Sharon is a town of 18,575 people in Norfolk County, on high ground between Boston and Providence. In 1740 this part of Stoughton became its second precinct, and people began building a meeting house on Pole Plain. Rev. Philip Curtis was ordained in 1742 and led the parish for 55 years, and in 1765 the precinct became the district of Stoughtonham.

On June 17 the women left behind heard heavy guns all day, so they climbed Sharon Hill and watched Charlestown burn twenty miles off. That night they met in the schoolhouse with Curtis to keep watch together. The next year the town asked to be renamed Washington, but the request was never granted, and on May 20, 1776, voters pledged their lives and fortunes to independence. Stoughtonham finally took the name Sharon in 1783.

“Her tombstone, in the quiet cemetery of Sharon, covers the remains of the bravest woman of the Revolution.”
History of Norfolk County, 1884
  • Cannon from the great waterAccording to the county history of 1884, the name Massapoag meant great water. Edmund Quincy Jr. noticed iron ore on the lake's beach, and Col. Richard Gridley drew down the water so the ore could be mined. Cannon were cast from that ore, and the first guns were tested at the pond in 1775.
  • Deborah Sampson's East Street farmFor about 17 months, Deborah Sampson fought in the Continental Army as Robert Shirtliff, until her secret was discovered. She wed Benjamin Gannett, a Sharon farmer, in 1785 and made her home with him on East Street. In 1983 Massachusetts named her its official State Heroine.
  • On stage in 1802In March 1802 Deborah Sampson told her story from the stage of Boston's Federal Street Theatre, then took it on tour to other towns.
  • A summer place by the lakeThe Boston and Providence Railroad opened in 1835 with a station in Sharon. Summer houses later rose on the bluffs above Lake Massapoag, along with the Massapoag House hotel and Burkhardt's Grove, which had a railroad station of its own, while the Boston Ice Company cut ice there. The Sharon Sanatorium opened in the pines in 1891 to treat early tuberculosis, and Moose Hill, now Mass Audubon's oldest property, became a sanctuary in 1916.
  • One block of North Main StreetThe Sharon Historic District keeps the look of the old center, which grew up around the 1740 meeting house. It holds the First Congregational Church of 1839, the Greek Revival Unitarian Church of 1842, both ringing bells made by Revere, and the Morse House of 1805, the town's earliest brick building. The 1914 library, raised with help from Andrew Carnegie, has Deborah Sampson's statue out front. The district joined the National Register in 1975.
