About Canton, Massachusetts
Canton is a town of 24,370 people in Norfolk County, at the foot of Great Blue Hill, some 15 miles southwest of Boston. Before English farms spread here, most of this land was Ponkapoag, the colony's second Praying Town after Natick. In 1657 John Eliot asked Dorchester to set aside a plantation there, and the town voted up to 6,000 acres for the Native people living at Ponkapoag. During King Philip's War, in October 1675, the colony forced those who remained onto Deer Island. Around 1700 Ponkapoag families began leasing their land to settlers, and the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag still carries the name.
The settlers' village raised its meetinghouse at what is now Canton Corner in 1707, and Stoughton broke away from Dorchester in 1726 with this land inside it. On February 23, 1797, the north part of Stoughton became the town of Canton. Elijah Dunbar picked the name because he believed the Chinese city of Canton, now Guangzhou, lay directly opposite on the globe. It doesn't, since both cities lie well north of the Equator.
“Thou knowest, O God, that their room is better than their company.”
- Powder, then Paul Revere's copperThe colony's powder mill on the stream below Forge Pond, built in 1776, guarded day and night, supplied most of the provincial army's powder in the war's first three years, per the 1893 town history. It exploded on October 30, 1779, and Benjamin Pettingill later died of his burns. Paul Revere bought it in 1801 for the nation's first copper rolling mill, making bolts for Old Ironsides. In 1862 the Revere Copper Company cast 80 brass cannon for the government.
- A tavern meeting in 1774On August 16, 1774, delegates from across Suffolk County gathered at the tavern of Colonel Thomas Doty. Parson Samuel Dunbar of the Canton Corner church opened with a prayer for liberty so daring one listener called it the most extraordinary he'd ever heard. The meeting moved on to Dedham, then Milton, where the Suffolk Resolves passed, yet the 1893 town history calls the Doty gathering the province's first meeting against British tyranny. The tavern burned on December 19, 1888.
- World's longest railroad viaductWilliam Gibbs McNeill and George Washington Whistler designed the Canton Viaduct, finished in 1835 for the Boston and Providence Railroad. At 615 feet, it was the longest and tallest railroad viaduct anywhere when it opened. Tsar Nicholas I sent men to draw it, and two viaducts on Russia's Moscow to Saint Petersburg line copied its design. Its stone arches still carry Amtrak and MBTA trains high over the Canton River, and it joined the National Register in 1984.
- America's oldest choral societyElijah Dunbar led the Stoughton Musical Society as its first president, holding the post from 1786 to 1808. Around 1790 its singers are said to have beaten a chorus from Dorchester in what may have been America's first singing contest, performing the Hallelujah Chorus from memory. Now called the Old Stoughton Musical Society, it is counted as the oldest choral society in the country.
- Rising Sun Stove PolishIn 1864 Elijah Morse started making stove polish in a small upstairs room in Canton, and his Rising Sun Stove Polish Company made him a wealthy merchant. He gave the land for Memorial Hall, dedicated on October 30, 1879, and from 1889 to 1897 he sat in Congress.
