About Randolph, Massachusetts
Randolph is a town of 34,984 people in Norfolk County, south of Boston. For most of the 1700s it was the South Precinct of Braintree, and its families complained that the center of the precinct sat over five miles from the meetinghouse, where the town's business took place. They petitioned to break away in 1792, and Governor John Hancock signed the act on March 9, 1793. The new town honored Peyton Randolph of Virginia, who had led the Continental Congress as its first president, and at its first town meeting Hancock won 75 of the 80 votes for governor.
Some residents never accepted the split. The act let them stay with Braintree, and a Braintree judge recalled at the 1893 centennial that some kept paying taxes there for thirty years. Randolph divided again in 1872, when East Randolph became the town of Holbrook. Its boot trade later faded early in the twentieth century, and Randolph grew into a suburb. From the 1950s Jewish families arrived from Dorchester and Mattapan, rising from fifteen or twenty households in 1950 to about 9,000 residents by 1980, which made Randolph home to the biggest Jewish community anywhere south of Boston.
“For miles around, the enterprise of Randolph then sought and fed the skilled mechanic.”
- Shoes in a saddlebagLocal tradition says the shoe trade began with Thomas French, captured after marching against Quebec in 1775. In 1839, boots and shoes employed 464 of Randolph's 677 families.
- Boots for the gold fieldsIn 1851 Jonathan Wales of Randolph traveled across the country and opened a San Francisco store for Randolph boots. When the home firms couldn't keep up with demand, he filled his shelves with boots from about twenty factories in the town and its neighbors, and gold came back east, sometimes $20,000 in one cloth bag. Frank Maguire sold Burrell & Maguire boots in Melbourne, Australia. In 1857 the town turned out 345,100 pairs of boots.
- Amasa Stetson's hall, 1842Amasa Stetson paid for Stetson Hall in 1842, a Greek Revival building on high ground at the center of town with six fluted Ionic columns rising two stories. Through the years the hall housed town meetings and town offices, an academy Stetson endowed, a bank and church services. Marble tablets naming the town's Civil War dead went up inside in 1867. A long restoration ended in 2009, and the hall joined the National Register in 2011.
- A library home since 1911Jonathan Belcher and his wife Abigail built their North Main Street house in 1806, and their son Jonathan enlarged it. In 1911 his granddaughter, Abigail Tower Tarbell, gave the house to the group then called the Ladies Library Association. Today that group is the Randolph Women's Club, and it still meets there. The Jonathan Belcher House joined the National Register in 1976.
- Birthplace of the SmokeoutIn 1969 a Randolph High School guidance counselor joked that a nickel for every cigarette butt on the ground would pay for all his students to go to college. The class of 1970, backed by the Randolph Rotary Club, asked local smokers to quit for one day and give what they saved to a scholarship fund. The idea spread across the country in 1977 as the Great American Smokeout.
