About Norwood, Massachusetts

Norwood is a town of 31,611 people in Norfolk County, on the Neponset River about 13 miles southwest of Boston. Ezra Morse built a sawmill in today's South Norwood in 1678, and farm families slowly filled in the land around it. On October 8, 1730, this south end of Dedham became the South Precinct, with the right to build its own church, but the families then argued over where it should stand. They held at least twelve meetings on the question in 1731 alone, and only in 1735 did they accept a site the General Court picked on the road to Walpole.

The church was gathered in 1736, and Rev. Thomas Balch was ordained its first minister. The precinct stayed part of Dedham for 142 years, until it became a town on February 23, 1872. Residents weighed calling it Balch, for that minister, but chose Norwood, after the English town, and they celebrated the new town on March 6 with Governor Washburn.

“A town where workmen and workwomen could live at less cost and in a better way than would be possible in any metropolis.”
Genealogical and Personal Memoirs, 1908
  • Guild's plow, 1775On April 19, 1775, word came that British troops were marching on Lexington and Concord. Aaron Guild, who led the parish Minutemen, left his plow in the middle of the field, oxen still in harness, and rode to Concord Bridge to fire on the British. Capt. William Bullard's company marched that day, and Israel Everett was wounded. The oxen and plow appear on the town seal, and a 1903 memorial stone near the field stands outside the public library.
  • A million skins a yearA Mr. Guild was tanning hides into leather here by 1776. George Winslow arrived in 1826, joined the family of tanner John Smith and started the tannery that grew into Winslow Brothers, able to tan more than a million skins a year by 1884. Frank G. Allen, who started out in that tannery and later led the Winslow Brothers and Smith Company as its president, was governor of Massachusetts from 1929 to 1931.
  • Two great book pressesBoston printers came to Norwood for cheaper, better living for their workers. In 1895 J. S. Cushing and Berwick & Smith moved into the new Norwood Press, a brick building 408 feet long. H. M. Plimpton & Company followed in 1897 with a complete book-making plant, and the Plimpton Press later printed the Prayer Book of King Edward VII in its American edition.
  • A town hall like a churchA special town meeting in 1926 voted unanimously to build the Norwood Memorial Municipal Building, and it was dedicated on November 11, 1928. Built of Weymouth granite in the Late Gothic Revival style, it is often mistaken for a church. Aaron Guild appears in its stained glass. Up in the tower hangs the Walter F. Tilton Memorial Carillon, whose 50 bells make it one of nine carillons in the state. The building joined the National Register in 1996.
  • F. Holland Day's houseIn 1859 Boston tanner Lewis Day and Anna, his wife, built a Second Empire house here. Between 1890 and 1892 it was remade in the Tudor Revival style for their son, F. Holland Day, a photographer whose influence once rivaled Alfred Stieglitz's. His firm, Copeland and Day, published Oscar Wilde's Salome in America. The Fred Holland Day House, at 93 Day Street, joined the National Register in 1977 and is home to the Norwood Historical Society.
