About North Attleborough, Massachusetts
North Attleborough is a town of 30,834 people in Bristol County, on the Ten Mile River. English settlers founded Rehoboth in 1634 on land bought from the Pokanoket leader Wamsutta, and in 1669 John Woodcock started a settlement here whose families farmed, fished and hunted. The whole area became part of the new Town of Attleborough in 1694.
Mills and jewelry shops grew up along the river, and by the 1880s the north end of Attleborough had its own village, bank and newspaper, the Evening Chronicle, begun in 1870. The act dividing the old town passed on June 14, 1887, and voters accepted it on July 30. East Attleborough kept the original name, and the north end became North Attleborough, the last town formed in Bristol County.
“This business is the bone and sinew of our town's growth, the backbone of her prosperity”
- Woodcock's tavern in 1670In July 1670 the colony court licensed John Woodcock to run an ordinary, or tavern, beside the Ten Mile River on the Rehoboth road to the Bay, provided he kept order. For years his fortified house stood almost alone on the Bay Road from Rehoboth to Dedham, and Judge Sewall ate boiled venison there. The garrison house came down in 1806, replaced by the three-story Steam Boat Hotel, and the site kept feeding travelers until about 1840.
- Gilt buttons at RobinsonvilleColonel Obed Robinson's firm began work around 1807 in a small yellow house at Robinsonville, which was the first building in town put up only for making jewelry. In 1826 the Robinsons opened the country's first gilt button factory, where each button went through more than thirty steps. Their mechanic John Hatch helped design a machine, patented in 1845, that could turn out 13,800 buttons in ten hours.
- A stone where the colonies metIn 1664 a colonial commission marked the boundary of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies on a tree later called the Angle Tree. After the tree was gone, the gravestone makers Samuel Fisher and his son set a slate marker on the spot in 1790, lettered Massachusetts Colony on its north face and Plymouth Colony on its south. The Angle Tree Stone joined the National Register in 1976, and since 1985 a shelter of brick and plexiglass has protected it.
- Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr.Joseph W. Martin Jr., a blacksmith's son, was born in North Attleborough and played shortstop for the high school. For many years he was publisher of The Evening Chronicle here, then began 42 years in Congress in 1925, and he served as Speaker of the House from 1947 to 1949 and from 1953 to 1955. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Attleboro Falls.
- A gasholder from 1882The North Attleborough Gas Company, founded in 1855, built a round brick house in Attleboro Falls in 1882 to hold its tank of coal gas. The building measures about 35 feet in diameter under a cone-shaped slate roof, and in 1987 it was one of at most three such gasholder houses known in the state. The Attleborough Falls Gasholder Building joined the National Register in 1996.
