About West Concord, Massachusetts
West Concord is a village of 6,320 people in Middlesex County, covering the southwest corner of Concord. The Assabet River flows just south of its center, heading northeast to meet the Concord River. This corner of Concord began as three separate villages: Warnerville, which people also called Concord Junction; Westvale, also known as Damondale; and Prison Village.
- The junction of 1872The Framingham and Lowell line was built in 1872, and where it crossed the Fitchburg Railroad it created the junction that gave Warnerville its other name. The crossing set off the growth and industry of West Concord, and by the close of the 1800s about 125 trains a day were running through it.
- Honey Fitz rode from hereJohn Fitzgerald, the congressman everyone called Honey Fitz, made his home on Main Street in West Concord from 1897 to 1903. He took the train between Washington and the village, boarding at the Concord Junction depot, which is now on the National Register as Union Station.
- Domet flannel on the AssabetCalvin Damon bought a cotton mill on the Assabet River in 1834. Several accounts credit him with inventing domet, a cloth he made on satinet machinery with a cotton warp and a wool filling. It was light and warm and didn't shrink the way all-wool cloth did, and domet flannel soon became an American staple. The Damon Mill is now on the National Register.
