About Sterling, Massachusetts
Sterling was once Chocksett, the Second Parish of Lancaster. By 1780 its voters were a majority, so they voted out the Lancaster town officers. The parish became its own town in 1781. It was named for General William Alexander, known as Lord Stirling, who served under George Washington.
By local tradition, Mary Sawyer of Sterling was the girl in the poem about a little lamb. She went to the Redstone School. The Sawyer house was destroyed by arson in August 2007, and a replica has since been built.
