About Leominster, Massachusetts
Leominster is a city of 43,782 people in Worcester County, set on a plateau above the Nashua River. Its name comes from the English town of Leominster, in Herefordshire. The land belonged to Lancaster from 1653, but King Philip's War left Lancaster almost empty. When settlers returned under a new grant in 1701, they bought the land from the Nashaway leader Chief Sholan and George Tahanto, his nephew.
In 1725 Gershom Houghton of Lancaster began a framed house of hewn oak on ground his father had given him. For seven years his family was the only one living on what became Leominster, and by tradition his wife carried the chimney stones in her apron. More families followed, and Leominster was incorporated as a town on June 23, 1740, a date that falls on July 4 under the new-style calendar. It became a city on November 2, 1915.
“We must, we can, and we will be free. We cannot part with our creation right.”
- Fifteen men for LexingtonLeominster's town meeting wrote to the people of Boston on March 3, 1766, pledging its support. When word of the alarm first reached town on April 19, 1775, fifteen men marched off toward Lexington, and a full company signed up that same day. The town's 1888 history found not one Tory, or even a suspected one, among its 153 families.
- Combs from a kitchenAbout 1775 Obadiah Hills began making horn combs by hand in the kitchen of the Hills house on Pleasant Street. Early makers rode to market with combs in their saddlebags, and the first screw press was built in a hidden hut in the Ashby woods until its patent came through. By 1853 the town had 146 workers in 24 comb factories. When horn ran short, celluloid, invented in 1868, took its place and earned Leominster the name Comb City.
- The Pioneer Plastics CitySamuel Foster worked for Bernard Wendell Doyle's Viscoloid Company before starting Foster Grant. In 1931 he saw an injection molding machine at Jack Goodman's factory in New York, ordered several and had them shipped in secret by way of Worcester, and his mechanics got them running. Foster Grant sold 20 million pairs of plastic sunglasses in 1937. Earl Tupper founded Tupperware here in 1938, and Don Featherstone designed the pink lawn flamingo for Union Products in 1956.
- A cottage on the Underground RailroadFrances and Jonathan Drake lived in a Greek Revival worker's cottage built in 1848. Before the Civil War it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the Drakes sheltered Shadrach Minkins after he was freed from custody at a court hearing in Boston. The Frances H. and Jonathan Drake House joined the National Register in 2008.
- Born here in 1774John Chapman, the nurseryman people came to call Johnny Appleseed, entered the world in Leominster on September 26, 1774. His birthplace is marked by a granite stone on Johnny Appleseed Lane. He grew apple trees from seed across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and since 1994 the city has honored him each September with a festival at Monument Square featuring crafts, booths and a parade.
