About Brownsville, Florida
Brownsville is a community of 16,583 people in Miami-Dade County, about 6 miles northwest of downtown Miami. It began as farmland beyond the Miami city limits, where a Black farmer named W. L. Brown made his home in the early 1910s. The Brownsville subdivision was laid out on paper in 1916, but growth came slowly, and in 1941 fewer than 100 families lived there.
More Black families arrived in the 1940s, and they founded the Brownsville Improvement Association to organize the neighborhood, build it up and help people own their homes. In 1945 two Black couples were jailed over a charge about how they handled their garbage, and Ku Klux Klan members burned crosses on lawns and marched against Black home ownership. Despite that, by the mid-1960s Brownsville had become a thriving community of Black professionals.
- Decline, then a comebackAfter restrictive covenants were outlawed and riots struck in 1968 and 1980, many middle and upper class families moved away. Brownsville lost people from 1970 until 2000. Between 2000 and 2010 it grew for the first time in over 40 years, reaching 15,313, and the 2020 census counted 16,583.
- A $100 million transit villageIn 2010, work started on Brownsville Transit Village, built on the 5.8-acre parking lot of the Brownsville Metrorail station. Its five high-rise towers hold 467 homes, with shops on the ground floor. Money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 helped pay for it, and it ranks among the largest affordable housing projects near transit in Miami.
