About Gladeview, Florida
Gladeview is a community in Miami-Dade County, about 7 miles northwest of downtown Miami. The city of Miami took in the area as one of its neighborhoods in 1925. When the Great Depression struck, Miami gave up its jurisdiction, and Gladeview became unincorporated county land. Its population rose from 11,535 in 2010 to 14,927 in 2020.
- Broadway AvenueThe 1922 plat of Liberty City gave NW 18th Avenue a second name, Broadway Avenue. By the mid-20th century, the blocks between 62nd and 70th Streets had become a busy shopping street. Grocery and food stores, fish markets, barber shops, beauty shops, a tailor, taverns and churches lined it. Georgia's Cafe on the strip made the Miami section of the Green Book for Black travelers during segregation.
- An Elks hall from 1956Liberty Lodge No. 1052, part of the African American Elks, was founded in August 1940. In 1956 the lodge built its hall at 6515-6525 NW 18th Avenue, near the middle of the Broadway shopping strip. Few Elks lodges in Miami still meet, and this is one of them. The county's historic preservation office prepared a report on designating the hall in 2021.
