About Little Haiti, Florida

Viter Juste, a Haitian businessman and activist, named Little Haiti. He wrote a Miami Herald article calling the area Little Port-au-Prince. Editors thought that name was too long. They shortened it in the headline to Little Haiti. For over a century before that, the area was known as Lemon City.

Settlers came to the land near Biscayne Bay after the Civil War. By 1889 their community had a post office called Motto. It took the name Lemon City by 1893. When the railroad reached Miami in 1896, Miami soon outgrew it.
