About Brownville, New Jersey

Brownville is a community of 2,746 people in Old Bridge Township, Middlesex County, less than 2 miles from the Monmouth County line. Its name goes back to 1737, when John Brown and his wife Susanne built a homestead here on roughly 1,000 acres that the King of England had granted them. The couple called their land Brownville, and over the years people came to call it Browntown.

  • The Brown Homestead, 1737John and Susanne Brown built their house in 1737 on the land the Crown had granted them. A 1976 history of Old Bridge, printed in the Weekend Sentinel for the nation's Bicentennial, still remembered John Brown as the man who built the first homestead in Browntown.
  • Farms for nine sonsJohn Brown didn't keep his grant in one piece. Each time one of his nine sons married, he handed that son a share of the land. Those shares became farms, and in 1976 many of the farms in Browntown could still be traced back to the nine Brown sons.
  • 2,746 people in 2020The census counted 2,746 people in Brownville in 2020, up from 2,383 in 2010. The crossroads called Cottrell Corners sits at the center of the community, and its land drains north toward Tennent Brook and the South River.
