About Brunswick, New York

Brunswick is a town of 12,581 people in Rensselaer County, on the eastern edge of Troy. Its first settlers were German Palatines from Livingston Manor who had volunteered for a 1711 expedition against Canada during Queen Anne's War. They liked the country they passed through, and between 1711 and 1715 a group of them made farms at Haynersville. A second Canadian campaign in 1724 sent another wave of veterans north, among them Johannes Heener, or Hayner.

The land belonged to the Van Rensselaer manor, so families leased their farms instead of owning them, and the town grew slowly. Brunswick was the rural part of Troy, organized as a town in 1791, until it split off in 1807. Innkeeper Nathan Betts hosted the first town meeting, and Flores Bancker served as first supervisor until 1809. Growth picked up only after the manor system collapsed in the 1840s.

“the said Meeting house was not fit for any Worship, for fear it might brake down and kill them”

  • Hayner's Tavern, 1772Settlers fled twice during the French wars, and the region did not calm down until the French fell at Quebec in 1760. Peace brought John Tillman's tavern, the first in the area, and in 1772 Johannes Hayner Jr. opened a second one that gave Haynersville its name. That same year Johann Heinrich Gross built the first grist mill, on the Quackenkill.
  • A log church by 1749Peter Nicholas Sommer began preaching at Haynersville in 1743, and the patroon donated a lot to hold a church and support its minister. By 1749 members of the Gilead Lutheran congregation had raised a simple log building on that lot, and no church in Brunswick is older. It may have gone up as early as 1743. The oldest surviving church record, a receipt, is dated 1746.
  • Ambushed near LansingburghDuring the Revolution, Tory bands used Bald Mountain as a lookout over the Hudson valley. When Burgoyne's army came near, local families sheltered in Lansingburgh. Abner Roberts, a Continental officer and Gilead member, rode out alone to check on his home and was ambushed by Tories near the top of the hill, killed and scalped. His body was found several days later.
  • Herman Melville's schoolroomIn 1840 the young Herman Melville was living with his mother in Lansingburgh. For half a year he crossed into Brunswick to teach at a one-room schoolhouse, years before he became a famous novelist.
