About Burley, Washington
Burley began in 1898 as a socialist colony founded by the Co-operative Brotherhood. Its members hoped such colonies would turn Washington, and then the nation, to socialism. The settlement's first name was Brotherhood. About 150 people lived there at its peak, but the population slowly declined after that.
One part of the colony, called Circle City, had its buildings arranged around the edge of a circle. Lumber drove the local economy. A cigar-making business did well for a short time, but other ventures never thrived.
