About Purdy, Washington

The town took its name from Joseph W. Purdy, a grocer from Tacoma. He gave the materials to build the first schoolhouse here. Horace Knapp, a logger and Civil War veteran, had bought the land in 1884. Knapp split it into lots and blocks to form the town. He also donated the school land.

The Purdy mill won a contract to cut huge beveled timbers. They went into a wooden dry dock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. The mill beat its rivals by adding an extra saw for the bevel. That cut five passes of the saw carriage down to four. The work brought a grocery store and a post office.

  • Oysters still grown in Burley LagoonAround 1900 a man named Ouellette, called the Frenchman, began canning Olympia oysters. He gathered the native oysters from his land on the Purdy spit. He took so many that they nearly died out. Growers still raise Japanese oysters and clams on the sandbars and in Burley Lagoon.
