About Canterwood, Washington
Canterwood is a community of 3,572 people in Pierce County, about 3 miles north of Gig Harbor. It was planned as a private neighborhood of homes, and horses shaped the land in its early years, with stables and riding trails running through the woods. A golf and country club later grew up at its center, and the course built there was meant to test the best players in the region.
- Named for woods and horsesThe name Canterwood recalls what the property held before the houses came: forest, horse trails and stables. The country club at the heart of the community still carries the name.
- Built to be the toughestRobert Muir Graves laid out the Canterwood golf course with one goal, to make it the hardest in the Pacific Northwest. He succeeded. By 1988 the course had earned a slope rating of 154, and it was so demanding that some players called it too tough to be fair.
- A border collie named BossCanada geese became a problem on the course, so by 1997 the club had bought Boss, a border collie trained to herd sheep and cattle. His job was to keep the geese moving and off the fairways.
