About California Polytechnic State University, California

California Polytechnic State University is a community of 8,583 people in San Luis Obispo County, named for the college at its center. Beginning in 1894, local residents under the lead of the journalist Myron Angel pressed the state to open a school in San Luis Obispo.

Their campaign paid off on March 8, 1901, when Governor Henry Gage signed the law that created the California Polytechnic School. Within a few years the new campus was hosting the public, and its students were helping to build it.

  • Students built the PowerhouseWork began on the campus Powerhouse in 1908, and students from the carpentry classes helped put it up. The plant went under steam in 1910. Students then ran it and kept its machinery working, and the pay they earned helped cover the cost of their schooling. The Powerhouse is now on the National Register.
  • First open house in 1904Three years after the governor signed the law, the school opened its campus to visitors for the first time. The event, held on May 24, 1904, was called the Farmers' Institute and Basket Picnic.
