About Cameron, Illinois
On February 22, 1854, a village was platted in Floyd Township on land owned by Robert Cameron. In his honor, it was first called Cameronville. A little later, the town of Cameron was platted north of the railroad. Additions were made in both townships, and all of it came to be known as Cameron.
When the railroad was finished, nearly all the business of Cold Brook moved to Cameron. The first house built on the village plat was a district school house. The railroad was the line between Cold Brook and Floyd townships, so the town had two school districts. In 1871 they joined, and a two-story school for 100 pupils was built.
- How the name Cameron stuckThe post office opened in February 1855, after the railroad was completed, with Mr. Hawkins as postmaster. After that, people settled on the name Cameron. At one time the town was quite a shipping point for grain.
