About Capron, Oklahoma

Capron is a town of 27 people in Woods County, in northwest Oklahoma. Before the Cherokee Outlet opened to settlers in September 1893, the spot was called Warren, a Santa Fe cattle stop made up of one store and an old railroad car the railroad had left behind. As the town grew after the opening, residents tried the names Sterling, Virgil and Kermit, but the railroad and the postal service turned each one down because other towns on the Santa Fe line already used them.

A committee was then formed to find a name both would accept: postmaster George Espy, Dr. G.W. Todd and Congressman Dennis Flynn. They proposed Capt. Allyn K. Capron, a Rough Rider who had died at the Battle of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War. Residents backed the choice by petition, the Post Office Department approved it in 1899, and Capron was incorporated in 1910.

  • Two banks and The Screech OwlIn its busy years Capron had two banks, the Capron State Bank as well as the Bank of Capron, plus three general stores, two drug stores, a hotel, a theater and a millinery shop. Readers took a weekly paper, The Capron Hustler, and a monthly one, The Screech Owl. Hampton's Foot Powder Factory made its product here, and the Driftwood Telephone Company ran its business from town.
  • The tornado of April 15, 1939Early that morning a tornado tore through Capron just as a train was passing, knocking several cars off the track. It wiped out the whole business section and the new school, and at least 15 people were hurt. Most of the businesses never came back, but the town built a new school, auditorium and gymnasium in 1940.
  • Schools from 1894 to 1976Driftwood Township citizens opened Capron's first school in 1894, a two-room frame building for grades 1 through 8. A two-story brick school followed in 1909 at a cost of $8,500, and the high school earned accreditation in 1912. Falling enrollment closed the high school in 1968. In 1976 patrons voted to close the elementary grades by a single vote, and after a court fight the Oklahoma Supreme Court upheld the result.
  • A post office for 100 yearsCapron's post office served the town and the farms around it for 100 years before it closed in 1994. Two big concrete grain elevators, the United Methodist Church and an American Legion Post still stand in town.
