About Carlsbad, Texas
Carlsbad is a community of 622 people in northwestern Tom Green County, on the North Concho River and U.S. Route 87, northwest of the county seat at San Angelo. It began in 1907 under the name Hughes, and in 1908 the Post Office required the young town to choose another name. Residents settled on Karlsbad, the name of a spa town in Bohemia, because local wells had been found to give mineral water.
- Built on the Hughes RanchIn 1907 T. J. Clegg, Ed Perry and their partners organized the Concho Land Company and bought the 60,000-acre Hughes Ranch in the North Concho valley. The town that grew on that land carried the ranch's name, Hughes, until the post office renaming.
- The Headlight of 1908The town's newspaper first came out in 1908 as the Hughes Headlight. When the town changed its name, the paper followed and became the Carlsbad Headlight.
- 2,024 feet upCarlsbad sits at an elevation of 2,024 feet, about fifteen miles northwest of San Angelo along U.S. Route 87. It has never incorporated, but it keeps its own post office, with the ZIP code 76934.
