About Grape Creek, Texas
Grape Creek is a community of 3,594 people in Tom Green County, just outside San Angelo. It began in 1858, when the Butterfield Overland Mail set up a stagecoach station on the east bank of the creek's east fork. That stop gave the area its start and made it one of the oldest settlements in the county.
The first Butterfield coach came through that fall with a single passenger, Waterman Ormsby of the New York Herald, who rode the whole line from St. Louis to San Francisco. He wrote warmly of the creek and of the good timber near the station. The stop stayed in use until the spring of 1861, when the mail line shifted its route north and left Texas. By then Mount Nebo School, the first of the Grape Creek schools, had opened close by.
- 26 pupils in 1901The community took shape before 1900. In 1901 its school had one teacher and 26 pupils. By 1934 Grape Creek had grown enough to support three elementary schools and a high school.
- From farm homes to a subdivisionState highway maps from 1936 showed a church, a cemetery close by, the school and homes spread across the countryside. In the 1980s the area had the Grape Creek-Pulliam School, and builders had laid out a new subdivision called Grape Creek Community.
- Home of the EaglesToday the Grape Creek Independent School District runs the public schools, and the high school's teams are the Eagles. The district traces its beginnings to Mount Nebo School, which opened near the old stage station by 1861.
