About Carthage, North Carolina

Carthage is a town of 2,775 people and the county seat of Moore County. It sits on a ridge whose creeks drain toward the Deep River and on into the Cape Fear River watershed. The town was incorporated in 1796 and takes its name from the ancient city of Carthage, in what is now Tunisia.

In the late 1800s the Tyson & Jones Buggy Company made its carts and buggies in Carthage, and it ranked among the leading builders of them in those years. The town has kept that trade in memory ever since, and its population grew from 2,205 in 2010 to its 2020 count.

  • The buggy factory and Henry FordAfter the Tyson & Jones plant closed, it stood empty for a few years and then burned down. Locals still tell a story that Henry Ford hoped to buy the building for a car assembly line and the owners turned him away. No evidence supports it, and Ford grew up in Detroit, where he also launched his companies.
  • William T. Jones, buggy makerWilliam T. Jones, a partner in the buggy factory, was born in 1833, the son of an enslaved woman and her white owner. He rose to become one of the leading business owners in Carthage. In the 1880s he dined with the county's white upper class, went to church with them and hosted lavish holiday parties, and he was still a prominent figure in town when he died in 1910.
  • The Buggy FestivalEvery spring Carthage holds the Buggy Festival on the town square around the old courthouse. It brings out music, hot rods, old tractors, buggies built by the Tyson factory and crafts from the potteries nearby. The Moore County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1979.
  • A pilot remembered on the squareJames Rogers McConnell, born March 14, 1887, lived in Carthage and flew for France in the Lafayette Escadrille during World War I, writing the book Flying for France. Two German planes shot him down near St-Quentin on March 19, 1917. He was the last of the squadron's Americans killed while serving France before the United States joined the war that April. Carthage honored him with an obelisk on its court square.
