About Casas Adobes, Arizona

Casas Adobes, an unincorporated community of 70,973 people, lies in the northern Tucson area of Pima County. Cattle ranchers used the land between the Cañada del Oro and the Rillito River until the 1920s, when the growing city and the automobile put it within easy reach. Maurice L. Reid came to Tucson in 1923 hoping to walk off tuberculosis, and in the late 1920s he bought a former ranch of 1,500 acres. He planted more than 200 acres of citrus and date palms, which grew into the center of Tucson's citrus trade, and he sold the rest off as home sites until the last parcel went in 1950.

Sam Nanini, born in Italy and later a Chicagoan, moved to Tucson with his wife, Giaconda, in 1948 because her asthma needed a dry climate. From the mid-1950s he built three subdivisions on about 300 acres, filled mostly with big ranch-style houses of adobe brick, and the community took its name from them. Many people counted those neighborhoods, together with his Casas Adobes Plaza at Oracle and Ina roads, as Tucson's first suburb.

  • Monkeys at Rancho NezhoneLeonie Boutall left Tennessee when her doctor said dry air would help her bronchial trouble. In the early 1930s she bought 100 acres west of North Oracle Road, beside the dirt track then called Orange Grove Road, and opened Rancho Nezhone, a lush luxury guest ranch with monkeys and parrots. Liberace, Kate Smith, William "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd and Gen. John Pershing stayed there. She sold in 1948; the Mission Palms Apartments now fill the site, behind its 300-stone wall.
  • Where Nicklaus got his startIn the 1960s Nanini and his son William built the Tucson National Resort, which carries the Omni name today. The PGA Tour's Tucson Open was played there for more than forty years, and Dean Martin was among the celebrities who hosted its early tournaments. Jack Nicklaus, whom Nanini discovered and promoted, played the course, and so did Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson.
  • Tohono Chul, the desert cornerIn 1985 Richard and Jane Wilson donated their historic house and its grounds so the desert would be protected and visitors could learn about its native plants and animals. That gift created Tohono Chul, 49 acres northwest of Oracle and Ina roads. The name is Tohono O'odham for "desert corner." In 2008 Travel+Leisure listed it among the Great Botanical Gardens of the World.
  • A dude ranch turned resortIn the 1910s William and Maria Watson had Tucson architect Merritt Starkweather design an adobe house for their dude ranch in the Santa Catalina foothills. Modernist architect Edward Nelson greatly enlarged the property in the late 1960s, and as the Westward Look Resort it became the Tucson area's first resort. The Watsons' adobe house is still at its center, known as the Vigas Room.
  • A city for a momentIn 1997 the Arizona legislature briefly stopped Pima County cities and towns from blocking new cities within six miles of their borders, and Casas Adobes residents voted that year to incorporate. Appeals struck down the law as unconstitutional, and the Superior Court annulled the new city. A second vote in 2001 failed, 56 to 44 percent, so Casas Adobes stays unincorporated, though it is older than both Oro Valley and Marana.
