About Catasauqua, Pennsylvania

Catasauqua is a borough of 6,518 people in Lehigh County, on the Lehigh River just north of Allentown. Its oldest corner, where Race Street meets Front Street, went by the name Biery's Port, and a grist mill built there around 1752 came before any other building.

Iron turned the river landing into a town. The Welsh ironmaker David Thomas came to build a furnace for the Lehigh Crane Iron Co., and on July 4, 1840, it was fired for the first time, burning hard anthracite coal. Before long it was making between 50 and 60 tons of pig iron each week, and by 1868 the works had six furnaces. In 1854 the town took the Lenape name Catasauqua, meaning dry or thirsty ground. Iron making at the works went on until 1930.

  • The father of CatasauquaDavid Thomas first named the settlement Craneville, after the company he had worked for in Wales. He went on to found the Presbyterian church, organize the town's first fire company, lay its first public water system and serve as its first burgess. His wife Elizabeth gave land and money for a Welsh Congregational Church, which is now gone. The couple's home stood on Pine Street, facing the Presbyterian church, and a state marker now shows the spot.
  • The Million Dollar TownIn 1917, while many of its young men were away fighting in World War I, Catasauqua raised $1 million in war bonds. No other community in the country had reached that mark before it, and the town has carried the nickname ever since.
  • Old Home Week since 1914Catasauqua held its first Old Home Week in 1914 to mark 75 years of the Lehigh Crane Iron Company. The town brought the celebration back for its 100th anniversary in July 2014, ten years after it marked 150 years as an incorporated borough in 2004.
  • Self-made fortunes by 1900The iron trade made money for the people who ran it. By 1900 the town had grown to 5,000 residents and held a larger share of self-made millionaires than any other town in the United States.
