About Hokendauqua, Pennsylvania
Hokendauqua is a community of 3,340 people in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, on the west bank of the Lehigh River. In 1854 David Thomas of the Thomas Iron Company bought two riverside farms that had belonged to Thomas Butz, and the company laid out a town there to house the men who would work its new iron furnaces.
The first furnace went into blast on June 1, 1855, and the second followed on October 23. Both ran well from the very start, so the company made Hokendauqua its home and kept its works and main office here in the years that followed.
- Named for a creekHokendauqua is named for a little stream that empties into the Lehigh from the east side, about half a mile above town. The name comes from two words of the Delaware language: Hockin, meaning land, and Dochive, meaning searching for. In local speech the name is cut down to "Hokey," said like hockey.
- Its own school districtOn Sept. 16, 1864, people of the village asked the Lehigh County court to make Hokendauqua an independent school district, and the court confirmed it on April 7, 1865. At that point Hokendauqua counted 145 dwellings and 700 residents, with three stores, large iron works, one school building holding three schools, and a Presbyterian congregation.
- A company town since 1854The Thomas Iron Company owned the town from about 1868 to 1924, and its houses and shops still stand largely as the company left them. The Hokendauqua Thomas Iron Company Town Historic District joined the National Register on September 19, 2022, with 135 contributing buildings from those years, as a well preserved example of a planned company town.
