About Cetronia, Pennsylvania

Cetronia is a community of 2,421 people in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, just west of Allentown. Cedar Creek, which flows east into Little Lehigh Creek, forms part of its southern edge. In 1852 the land here belonged to Charles Mertz, who also ran the mill on the creek for a number of years. About 1858 Mertz divided his land into building lots and sold them, and the houses built on those lots became a village that people called Cedarville, after the creek.

  • Cedarville becomes CetroniaThe village got its own post office in 1888. Residents asked to keep the name Cedarville, but postal officials turned it down. After several letters went back and forth, the department insisted on the name Cetronia, and the village agreed to it.
  • A mill older than the RevolutionGeorge Knauss, an early settler, built the large three-story stone mill on Cedar Creek before the Revolution, and for a long time it was known as the Cedar Creek Mill. Jacob Haines bought it in 1905, and soon afterward a fire destroyed it. Haines rebuilt the mill and was still running it himself in 1914. It is now on the National Register as Haines Mill.
  • Its own fire companyThe volunteer Cetronia Fire Department and the Cetronia Ambulance Corps answer emergency calls in Cetronia and the communities around it.
