About Dorneyville, Pennsylvania

Dorneyville is a census-designated place of 4,850 people in Lehigh County, on the west edge of Allentown, split between South Whitehall and Salisbury townships. The village took shape at a busy crossroads about a mile southwest of Allentown, where Peter Dorney started a hotel early in the area's history. Dorney and later his sons kept the hotel going until 1871, and the trade it drew gathered a small village around it, first spelled Dorneysville. That crossroads is on the National Register as the Dorneyville Crossroad Settlement.

Solomon Dorney held several hundred acres beside Cedar Creek, and around 1860 he dug ponds there to start a trout hatchery. About 1870 he began turning the grounds into a place for picnics and all kinds of amusements. The idea worked, and Dorney Park soon became a favorite resort every summer.

  • Trout for two big citiesDorney stocked his ponds with huge numbers of trout. Within ten years the hatchery had grown into a large business, shipping fish all over the country and above all to the markets in Philadelphia and New York.
  • Sold to the trolley in 1900The park's swimming pool became one of its biggest draws, and people said it was the largest man-made pond built for swimming anywhere in the world. In 1900 a trolley company bought Dorney Park, and from then on the same owners operated both the amusement grounds and the railway that carried visitors there. Today the grounds are Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom.
  • The King George Inn, 1756The King George Inn, a historic inn founded in 1756, also stands in Dorneyville, giving the village a landmark that predates the Dorney family's hotel and park.
