About Charlotte Harbor, Florida

Charlotte Harbor is a community of 3,784 people in Charlotte County, on the north bank of the Peace River across from Punta Gorda. Its first settlers called the place Hickory Bluff, for a bluff above the harbor that was thick with hickory trees. After the Civil War an axe handle factory cut those trees down. A post office opened under the name Charlotte Harbor in 1872, and over time the whole area took that name.

Cattle built the town. In 1862 rancher Joel Knight put up a dock at what is now Bayshore Road and Sibley Street, where he shipped cattle to the Confederate Army. Ranchers brought their herds down from Florida's interior along the trail now known as King's Highway. Settlers came with the cattle business, and by 1876 the community had a post office, a Methodist church and a school with two rooms.

  • Pioneers from Fort MyersTwo Union soldiers posted at Ft. Myers, Nathan H. De Coster and Capt. John F. Bartholf, married Florida women and took up homesteads near Hickory Bluff. John Lomans, an African-American soldier who had also served at the fort, worked with De Coster to build the first sawmill south of Tampa. Part of the original settlement is now Chester Roberts Park, inside the Charlotte Harbor Town Local Historic District.
  • Mott Willis Store, 1923Mott Willis, a North Carolina native, ran the ferry service linking Punta Gorda with Charlotte Harbor. In 1923 he put up a bigger store on an empty lot of his east of the Knight store. Working with his son Claude, he ordered a mold press from Sears and Roebuck and cast the rusticated concrete blocks by hand. For many years residents met at the store to talk, and it is now listed on the National Register.
  • Hurricane Charley in 2004On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley came ashore on the Florida mainland for the first time at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor.
