About Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania
Chestnut Hill is a community of 6,689 people in Northampton County, about 3 miles north of Easton. The hill rises above that city, and in 1817 a spring high on its side became the source of Easton's first piped water. Its southeastern slope also held a green stone that was sold under the name Verdolite.
- Easton's water from 1817Until 1817, Easton families drew their water from wells and springs. On March 24 of that year, an act of the Assembly incorporated the Easton Water Company. The company tapped a spring set high on Chestnut Hill, roughly a mile out, and carried its water through pipes made of wood down to a reservoir on a hilltop at today's Sixth Street.
- A standpipe and a pumping stationEaston later switched to the Delaware River for its water supply. Even then, the hill kept its role: the city put up a standpipe and set up a pumping station on Chestnut Hill.
- Verdolite from the slopeAlong the southeastern slope of Chestnut Hill lay a green serpentine stone that was sold as Verdolite. Rose-colored dolomite crystals were scattered through the green, and George P. Merrill's 1908 book on building stones said that sawing and polishing it brought out a most beautiful combination of colors.
