About Cheval, Florida
Cheval is a census-designated place of 12,522 people in northwestern Hillsborough County, about 17 miles north of Tampa, with Pasco County on its northern edge. It sits inside the unincorporated community of Lutz, and it is named for the big gated subdivision that covers most of its ground. That subdivision is home to the TPC of Tampa Bay, a golf course built for crowds that brought professional tournaments to Cheval.
- A course by Weed and RodriguezBobby Weed designed the TPC course in Lutz together with the golfer Chi-Chi Rodriguez. It was built stadium-style so big galleries could watch, with water on nearly every side to catch stray shots, and it drew some of the largest crowds of the year when the GTE Suncoast Classic came to town. In 1997 the Classic was played here on February 14-16.
- Rocky Thompson's 61Rocky Thompson won the 1994 tournament at Cheval with a closing round of 61. Ten birdies carried him to that score and the victory.
- Nicklaus wins in 1996The back nine is the toughest stretch of the Cheval course, and it decided the 1996 GTE Classic. Isao Aoki was in front until he played the back nine in 45, a collapse that lost him the lead and handed the win to Jack Nicklaus.
