About Odessa, Florida

Odessa is a community of 8,080 people in Pasco County, northwest of Tampa. The W.M. Mobley family came down from Savannah, Georgia, in the middle 1800s and became the area's first settlers. In the 1880s Peter A. Demens, a Russian immigrant, helped pay for the Orange Belt Railway, which ran from Sanford through Trilby to St. Petersburg, and he is believed to have given Odessa its name.

Demens took the names of both Odessa and St. Petersburg from cities in Russia. The railroad tracks later ran alongside what is now S.R. 54, and on May 22, 1900, Odessa got its own post office, with Peter Strand as the first postmaster.

  • A sawmill town in 1917Lumber kept Odessa working. The Dowling Lumber Mill turned out 100,000 board feet daily in 1917, while the Lyon Pine Saw Mill produced 80,000. Mill hands earned $1 a day, but they were paid in tokens that could only be spent on goods at the company store.
  • The mill fire of 1922The big Dowling Brothers mill had replaced several smaller sawmills in the area. A fire then destroyed the company's Odessa plant and all the lumber kept on site, as the New Port Richey Press told readers in its Oct. 19, 1922, issue. The owners did not give up, and by November 24, 1922, the same paper reported that crews had started rebuilding the mills.
  • Ranches, horses and an airportOdessa was long a place of open land, cattle ranches and horse properties. Until 2004 the community also had an airfield, Tampa Bay Executive Airport. In more recent years, new suburban neighborhoods have filled in the open ground as Tampa's population has spread outward.
