About Chowchilla, California

Chowchilla is a city of 19,039 people in Madera County, in California's Central Valley. Its name is an English spelling of chaushila, the name of a Yokuts people who once lived in and near what is now Madera County. A post office opened here in 1912, and Chowchilla became an incorporated city eleven years later, in 1923.

Farming built the young city. By 1939 Chowchilla had 847 people, and the farms around it kept dairy herds, hogs and poultry and grew cotton, fruit and grain. Cotton gins, creameries and a cottonseed oil mill in town handled those crops, and other plants made concrete pipe.

  • A farm railroad from 1915O.A. Robertson built the Chowchilla Pacific Railroad in 1915, and his United States Farm Land Co. ran it. The line carried traffic for more than 40 years over 13 miles of track, from the main line at Chowchilla out to Dairyland.
  • The 1976 school bus kidnappingOn July 15, 1976, 26 Chowchilla children and their bus driver were kidnapped. They were taken to a quarry in Livermore and shut inside a moving van buried in the ground. The driver and some of the children broke out and reached the quarry guard, and every one of them came home unharmed. Three young men, among them the quarry owner's son, were convicted and sentenced to life.
  • Screenwriters and athletesHenry Farrell, who came from Chowchilla, wrote What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and he was also the writer of Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Ronald D. Moore, another Chowchilla native, made his name with Star Trek and the new Battlestar Galactica. Asterisk Talley grew up here to become a women's golf champion, and Cameron Worrell went on to play in the NFL for the Chicago Bears.
